🌿 Evils Beyond Number Have Surrounded Me – Psalm 40:12
“For evils beyond number have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; they are more numerous than the hairs of my head, and my heart has failed me.” — Psalm 40:12
In verse 11, which we reflected on yesterday, we saw the Psalmist make statements of faith. First, that the Lord would not withhold His compassion from him. Second, that the Lord's lovingkindness and truth would preserve him continually.
He believed in the Lord while he was in darkness—in uncertain situations and in sin. Things were not well on his side. And that is what we reflect on in today's verse.
First: He Was Surrounded by Evils Beyond Number
Evils in this context can mean uncertainty—plagues, locusts, attacks—but also sin. The Psalmist was saying he was surrounded by evils beyond number. That is terrible.
What kind of evils are surrounding you now? Could it be; Barrenness? · Rejection? · Failure? · Calamity—loss of property or loved ones? · Disease? · Strange things around your life?
Things are hot. You feel hopeless, discouraged, and helpless.
Friends, sometimes evil surrounds us. But let me tell you the truth of God's Word:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4
Stand firm in that Word. Take it personally—because it is true of everyone who believes in Jesus Christ.
Second: His Iniquities Had Overtaken Him, and He Was Not Able to See
I do not know about your struggle with sin, but I know this: whatever iniquity it is, it can blind our eyes.
Ungodliness. Lust. Pornography. All kinds of sexual immorality. Deception. Unfaithfulness—cheating on your husband or wife. Dishonesty. Corruption.
All of these can blind you.
But there is hope. Call on Jesus to save you and wash away your unrighteousness and your iniquities.
They may be more numerous than the hairs on your head. Confess like David—and you shall be set free.
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9
Third: His Heart Failed Him
His heart failed him. Yours can fail you too.
But Jesus—our true and living God—will never fail you. Instead, He will strengthen your heart and be your portion forever.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” — Psalm 73:26
🙏 Let Me Pray with You
Father, You know us. Search our hearts. May we confess like the Psalmist our failures. And may You, O Lord, not withhold Your compassion from us. May Your lovingkindness and truth preserve us now and forevermore. Amen.
