EVERY SATURDAY: Vesper Truth
> By Silas Oriokot
> Peace to you, friend. I pray this truth finds you strong in the Lord and in good health. This evening, I’ve been reflecting on Paul’s opening words in his first letter to Timothy: “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” —1 Timothy 1:1-2
Beloved, we see many today claiming titles like “Apostle” in our churches—but we must be vigilant. Many are false. Paul’s authority rested on two divine realities:
1. The command of God our Savior — who rescued us from wrath through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, securing eternal life for all who believe.
2. The command of Christ Jesus our hope — for apart from Him, we are hopeless. Without Christ, there is no saving knowledge of God.
This is the test of true ministry. Does it point to Christ crucified and Christ our hope? Or does it peddle earthly promises? Paul wrote to Timothy—his “true son in the faith”—to warn of false doctrines already spreading in Ephesus: myths, endless genealogies, and speculations that distorted God’s work of faith.
Today, it’s far worse. Wolves preach prosperity in Christ’s name while leading souls to destruction. Stay alert! Hold fast to the gospel: salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Like Timothy, be a faithful child of the truth—rooted in Scripture, obedient to Christ. May God pour out His grace, mercy, and peace upon you tonight. Rest well, and may Christ be powerfully exalted in every pulpit this Lord’s Day!
