“Contending for the Faith: A study of Jude Verse 3”
In Jude verse 3, the apostle addresses the saints as “beloved”—a term reserved for those who walk in obedience and imitate God (Ephesians 5:1). As we journey through this profound letter, we see Jude’s urgent purpose: though he initially intended to write about our common salvation, his pastoral heart was stirred to plead with the church. These believers —“called, loved by God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ” (Jude 1:1) —faced a critical threat.
Jude’s appeal flows from deep concern: false teachings had infiltrated the church, threatening to shipwreck the faith of Christ’s followers. His charge is unequivocal: “Contend earnestly for the faith once for all delivered to the saints.” This faith is not negotiable or evolving —it is the eternal, unchanging truth of the gospel, entrusted to us for steadfast guardianship.
Jude’s diverted focus (from salvation to warning) only underscores the gospel’s priceless value. This “common salvation” rests solely on grace:
🫱🏻🫲🏻We all have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).
🫱🏻🫲🏻The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23).
🫱🏻🫲🏻Yet while we were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1), God demonstrated His love: Christ took our place. Jesus bore our guilt, died our death, and rose again —securing for us the free gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23).
This salvation is “common” not because it is ordinary, but because it is universally offered, equally received, and shared by all who believe. It is:
👊🏿 One sacrifice for all: Jesus’ finished work on the cross (John 19:30).
👊🏿 One way for all: Justification by faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9).
👊🏿 One Lord of all: Our shared hope in Christ (1 Timothy 2:5).
To “contend” is to cling unwaveringly to this gospel. In a world of shifting doctrines, we stand firm on the rock of Christ’s atonement—the faith delivered once for all.
If you haven't responded to this call, now is your hour. Say this, “Jesus, I confess You as Lord. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. Save me, and make me Yours.” If you've done so, you're saved and welcome to our common salvation —the greatest hope on earth. This is the same message that has been shared throughout the ages, and it's the same message that has brought hope and redemption to countless people.
