🌿 The Deliverance of the Lord

“He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; and He set my feet upon a rock, making my footsteps firm.” — Psalm 40:2

In today's verse, the Psalmist tells us what God has done. After patient waiting, he testifies of the deliverance of the Lord. Here, we see two specific things God did for him.

First, He brought him up out of the pit and the miry clay. The pit of destruction is a place of hopelessness, ruin, or death that traps a person. David was in that state—but he gives a testimony: *God brought me up.* You may be in the same state. You feel like you are rotting. You have been scammed. Sickness is eating you up. Cry out to the God who brought David up, and patiently wait on Him.

Let me share a memory from my village in Tubur. There were days we went to the garden with bulls to plough when the soil was wet from rain. The ground became sticky, miry clay. You would step on it and sink. Sometimes your gumboot would remain stuck in the mud while your leg came out. The more you struggled, the deeper you sank. That is what life can feel like. You feel stuck. Trapped. Helpless. Depression is too much. Hopelessness is pulling you down. Family members are sick. Ulcers are eating up your children. Money is finished. No food. No clothing. No land. Life is stressful. David went through all that. But he patiently waited for the deliverance of the Lord. He called out, and God brought him out of the pit of destruction and out of the miry clay. I write this to tell you, my brother and sister: you too can call on Jesus, and He will come to your rescue. Maybe you have a loan you are struggling to repay. Patiently wait on the Lord. Cry out to Him. He will help you.

Second, He set his feet upon a rock. God did not only bring David out of the pit and the miry clay—He also set his feet upon a rock. A rock is hard stone. Solid ground. A cliff or boulder that does not shift, sink, or dissolve when the rain comes. You can actually stand on it without slipping. And the Rock is God Himself. He makes us firm, secure, and lifted up. So we must trust in the Lord and make Him our trust—because He is the Rock.

In the song I have written, the second verse says: “When darkness surrounds me, and fears take their toll, You are the Rock that holds me, my shield and my goal. With every step, I'll follow You, through trials and tribulations, I'll trust in You.”

When my wife and I sing this, we do it with boldness and complete trust in the God who brings us up and sets us upon the Rock of Ages.

Father, You know the person reading this right now. You know their situation. You know what troubles them—the pain, the persecution, the fears. O God, my Rock and my Deliverer, remember them. Pull them from the darkness. Restore to them the joy of Your salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
