The Presence of God
Dear friend,
People everywhere are searching for something, but sadly many don’t know what that something is. Perhaps they’ve encountered it in fleeting moments, unsure of exactly what to call it. That something is the presence of God—which every human being was made to experience.
There is absolutely nothing as comforting or transformational as the presence of the Lord. And from the moment you placed your faith in Jesus, you’ve been able to consciously live in that presence, receiving His sustaining grace and love. Intimacy with God requires certain things, such as vulnerability and repentance. As in any relationship, it also takes desire and commitment. Closeness with the Lord can be hindered, and at times it may need repair. But it is your birthright in Christ—an indescribable gift from the God of all the universe, who both keeps the stars in place and knows you perfectly.
I’ll give you an example. Ever since I was young, I’ve been inspired by the beauty of the heavens. I’d look up at the stars and be awed by the glory of the Creator and His unfathomable power. One of my most memorable experiences proved His nearness as I gazed up at that vast expanse. Finishing college, I was uncertain and anguished about God’s will for my life. In desperate need of reassurance, I sent up an unusual prayer from the depths of my soul, asking to see two shooting stars. A few days later, just at the time and place I was looking, He sent a pair of bright meteors streaking across the night sky.
It was a perfect answer from a Father who loved me and was with me every moment—even as near as my own heart. In that instant, He gave me the comfort, guidance, and peace I needed to pursue His path. And as our relationship grew over the years, I often couldn’t wait to get home in the evenings to seek out the Lord. I have no doubt that I’ve been able to serve God and His church—in good times and bad—because of all that I received from His wise and tender presence.
You may have learned from childhood that Jesus is in your heart. Perhaps at salvation you were awed to find out that “your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3). Maybe you have been enjoying His presence for many years. But you’ve probably also realized something else: Just because He’s with you doesn’t mean you always feel as if He’s with you. At times you may feel very alone. But I want to encourage you with something I sincerely believe—the best is yet to come, so long as you continue seeking Him.
Yes, you can increase your awareness of the Lord. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you” (Matt. 7:7). While God already knows you, He wants you to know Him better and more deeply, and His Word and His Spirit are always ready to guide you.
It's a delight for me to welcome you to these pages. My mother, who knew God’s presence very well, used to say, “Where our mind goes, our feet soon follow.” Since you’re here, your heart is probably already set on the Lord. My prayer is that this resource will help steer your mind there as well.
May you discover new riches of comfort and strength as you begin. You and the Lord—together. He’s waiting.
